Common Questions
Do I need surgery for knee pain?
Not always. Many knee conditions respond well to physiotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Surgery is recommended only when conservative treatments fail or the joint damage is significant.
How long is recovery after joint replacement?
Most patients are walking the next day and resume normal activities within 4–6 weeks. Full recovery can take 3–6 months depending on the joint and your overall health.
Is arthroscopy a major surgery?
No, arthroscopy is a minimally invasive keyhole surgery. It involves smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.
How long do joint replacement implants last?
Modern implants are designed to last 15–20 years. 90% of knee replacements are still functioning well at 20 years. Longevity depends on your activity level, body weight, and following post-operative care. We use high-quality implants suited to your age and lifestyle.
Is joint replacement covered under Ayushman Bharat or health insurance?
Yes. Knee and hip replacement are covered under AB-PMJAY (Ayushman Bharat) for eligible patients, including all citizens aged 70 and above regardless of income. Most private health insurance policies also cover joint replacement surgery. We assist you with documentation and cashless processing at Apex Orthopedic and Eye Hospital.
Can I use an Indian toilet or sit on the floor after knee replacement?
Indian-style squatting requires bending the knee beyond 110°, which is not safe in the first few months after replacement. We recommend a western commode with a raised seat for the initial 6–8 weeks. Most daily activities including sitting on a chair, climbing stairs, and light walking are possible within weeks.
At what age is knee or hip replacement recommended?
There is no fixed age limit. Most patients are between 55 and 80 years old, but younger patients with severe joint damage also benefit. We recommend replacement only after non-surgical treatments — physiotherapy, injections, and medication — have been tried and the pain significantly affects daily life.
